Office Open XML: Part 2 - Generating Summary Office Reports

    Attachment: SummaryReports_HF.JPG
This post is part two of a four part review of HealthFrame's recently introduced support for Office Open XML - a standard format for office documents.  In this post we address how HealthFrame and some new OpenHealth Service (OHS) plug-ins can now generate summary reports that can be read and interacted with, using commonly used office suites.

In order to use these OHS plug-ins, besides having an installed copy of HealthFrame, your PC you will need access to an Office Open XML-compliant office suite such as Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Office 2003 with the compatibility pack,  Corel Wordperfect, Novell OpenOffice, etc.

We have published in our OHS plug-ins service directory   a couple of new sample OpenHealth (OHS) plug-ins that generate word processing documents:
    - Summary of your Healthcare providers
    - Summary of your medications

These two samples are similar to the built-in summary reports and are designed to be used as an introduction to using office tools in conjunction with HealthFrame, as well as serve to start discussion in our community forum about formatting, layouts, new reports, etc.  Remember that one of the neat things about supporting standard office tools, is that you - our customers - can modify the forms and send them back to us with your suggestions for future considerations!

Here are some of the benefits of HealthFrame's ability to generate office documents:
    • You can view your reports from any platform where you have compatible office suites - the image below shows the two HealthFrame-generated sample office reports as they are displayed in NeoOffice Writer (Mac) and Microsoft Word 2007 (Windows XP).  For a more complete listing of compabible office suites please see wikipedia.
    • These are actual office documents that you can interact with, including changing the formatting of the report layout,  copying and pasting into other documents, etc
    • Even though you can't "see it", these documents are containers for your CCR record: they're acting as an envelope that can be opened by your doctor's electronic health record system, giving your health providers access to additional detailed information about your health records.
    • Access to office suites is fairly universal and generating office-based reports makes it easier for you to share your documents with your healthcare providers.

As always, we look forward to your feedback,
    Your HealthFrame Team
